Description

JMC:2400 (1 credit)

Students learn about media law and press freedom in the United States and travel to Washington, D.C. to engage with attorneys and journalists working to protect and advance the First Amendment rights of the press. This course pairs pre-travel readings with on-site, real-world activities and reflective writing assignments to help students learn more about media law and envision future careers post-graduation. The experience includes opportunities for students to tour the White House, visit the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, learn from NBC and NPR reporters covering court hearings, and meet with several SJMC alumni working to protect First Amendment rights.

This course is typically offered over Spring break every other year (even years). Credit for this course will be awarded for successful completion of pre-travel readings, participation in on-site activities, and submission of a short writing assignment upon returning to Iowa. Students must apply for admission into the course.
