The Student Center, located in Room E350 Adler Journalism Building, is a place for students to study, relax between classes, work on group projects, check e-mail, do research, and browse key publications in the field of journalism and mass communications.
Services offered
- Peer mentors–Peer mentors serve to support and encourage student success. Make an appointment with a peer mentor today!
- Academic advising–Anna Newnum's office is located in E350D.
- Writing assistance
- Internships and job opportunities–Michelle Sillman's office is located in E350E.
- Coffee and tea cart–Come get a cup of coffee or tea and a breakfast bar or piece of fruit.
- Conference room–Located in E350B. Available for students who want to work on group projects, hold student organizations meetings, or conduct phone interviews. A scheduling book is available at the front desk to reserve the room.
- Magazines and newspapers–The Student Center maintains a collection of major newspapers and magazines available for students to read. There is a selection of journalism trade publications and magazines that represent different areas of magazine writing including food, travel, entertainment, sports, arts, health, and music.
- Reserve textbooks–Required textbooks for courses are on reserve at the front desk. Students may check books out for up to 48 hours. In addition, other reserve readings and videos are available.
- Podcast studio–The podcast studio is located in E350C. It is available for SJMC students. Class assignments are prioritized. Reservation book and sign-out sheet at the front desk.
- Computers–Mac computers are available for working on assignments, printing homework, doing research, and checking your email.
- Black/white and color printers–ITC printers are available.

Circulation policies
Reserve items
Reserve items
- Students must show a current student ID to check out reserve items. Student Center staff will hold the card until the reserve item has been returned.
- Reserve items may be borrowed for a two-hour period during the day, and overnight from 4 p.m. until 9 a.m. the following day, unless otherwise specified by the instructor (for example, some instructors allow materials to be borrowed for a three-day period).
Fines: $0.50 per hour for two-hour loans, and $0.50 per day for 3-day reserve
Books and monographs
Books and monographs
- Students must show a current student ID to check out items from the Student Center. Undergraduates may borrow books for two weeks. Books can be renewed, but will be subject to recall if another patron requests to use the material. Graduate students may borrow books on extended loan, with items falling due on the last day of the current semester.
- Faculty and staff may borrow books on extended loan, with items falling due at the end of the current academic year.
- Books that have been checked out by students and faculty are subject to recall if they have been checked out for 2 weeks or longer. Please talk to the Student Center coordinator to find out how to place a hold on material that is checked out.
Fines: $0.50 per day per item. Fines begin to accrue on the first day following the due date.

- Students may use current issues in the Student Center. They may not be removed except by faculty. Noncurrent issues may be checked out for a period of two weeks.
- Journals and magazines are subject to recall by another user at any time.

Thesis, masters projects, and honors projects
Thesis, masters projects, and honors projects
- Students may view theses, dissertations, and projects in the Student Center. Faculty may make arrangements to borrow theses for short periods of time.
