The SJMC offers three graduate degree options:

  • PhD in Mass Communication
  • Master’s in Mass Communication
  • Online Master's Degree in Strategic Communication

Each program emphasizes individualized inquiry in a lively intellectual environment where students and faculty work together as a community of learners.

The PhD and Master’s in Mass Communication programs start in the fall semester. Deadline to apply is January 1 for the following fall. Students seeking financial assistance should apply by that date.

Applications for the Online Master's Degree in Strategic Communication program are accepted for spring, summer, and fall semesters.

Doctor of Philosophy in Mass Communication

The PhD program provides training in research methods, communication theory and teaching skills. The School is the home of the first PhD program in the field of mass communication. Graduate courses are small and many students collaborate with faculty members in their research. Students in the PhD program prepare for careers as teachers and researchers.
