Biography

Phil Currie retired as Senior Vice President/News in Gannett Co., Inc., after 44 years in news work. He is a graduate of the University of Iowa (B.A. 1962) and Pennsylvania State University (M.A. 1964). He began at The Times-Union in Rochester (NY)., working as a reporter, editorial writer, political reporter and executive city editor before joining Gannett’s corporate staff in 1977. There he held various jobs, rising to Senior Vice President/News (1995) and retiring December 2008. He now is a trustee of the Freedom Forum Institute in Washington, D.C. and a member of the Board of Visitors for the Morgan State University School of Global Journalism and Mass Communication. He serves on the Professional Advisory Board for the Iowa School of Journalism, was elected to the School’s Hall of Fame (2015) and received an Iowa Distinguished Alumni award (2017). During his years as an undergraduate on the Daily Iowan, he was a reporter, assistant sports editor, sports editor and (1961-62) editor.
