Biography

What is Jane's story?

Jane Singer is Professor of Entrepreneurial Journalism at City University London, where she is continuing her teaching and research into journalistic innovation.

At Iowa, she most recently taught undergraduate classes in writing, ethics and political journalism, as well as graduate courses on social science theory and the changing media landscape.

Singer's professional experience includes ten years in the editorial department of what evolved into the Prodigy interactive service. She was Prodigy's first news manager, in charge of one of the first around-the-clock news products ever to be delivered to people's homes through a computer. She also has five years experience as a reporter and editor at three East Coast newspapers.

Singer holds a PhD in journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia, an MA in liberal studies from New York University, and a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Georgia. Born in New York and raised in Atlanta, she came to Iowa in 1999 after several years on the journalism faculty at Colorado State University. From 2007 to 2010, she served as Johnston Press Chair in Digital Journalism at the University of Central Lancashire in England. She worked closely with Johnston Press, one of the largest publishers of regional newspapers in Britain, to help their journalists make the transition from a print world to a digital one.

Her research interests include journalism ethics and the sociology of digital news work, or the people and processes behind the creation of news in a network. She is co-author of Participatory Journalism in Online Newspapers: Guarding the Internet’s Open Gates, published in 2011, and Online Journalism Ethics: Traditions and Transitions, published in 2007. Her work also has appeared widely in scholarly journals and other publications.

Singer is 2013-2014 chair of the Association of Education in Journalism and Mass Communication  standing committee on Professional Freedom and Responsibility and past president of Kappa Tau Alpha, the national journalism honor society. She serves on the editorial boards of eight scholarly journals, including Journalism & Mass Communication QuarterlyJournalismJournalism Studies, and the Journal of Mass Media Ethics.
