SJMC Students had valuable internship opportunities – from Washington, DC to New York City and back to Madison, Wisconsin and throughout Iowa – where they gained real-world professional experience.

Sydney Parker spent the summer working for the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation (INHF). She traveled to unique outdoor places, conducted interviews for stories for the INHF quarterly magazine, wrote blog posts for a variety of audiences, created trending social media content, and ran the Hagie Heritage Award campaign.

Dravin Murti spent his summer as the social media intern for Bleacher Report. The focus of his internship was content creation and scheduling social media. His daily tasks included driving referrals towards the Bleacher Report website and articles written by the staff. Dravin is continuing as an intern in a remote role this semester.

Cole Krueger worked as a multimedia journalist at WMTV-15 in Madison, Wisconsin. He covered stories all over the Madison area. He shot and edited b-roll and wrote scripts for channel 15’s nightly shows. Cole also took photos and converted his TV scripts for the station’s website.

Roxy Ekberg spent her summer at two prestigious organizations in Washington, D.C. She started the summer at the POLITICO Journalism Institute, an intensive training program that provides insight and access into political reporting. Paired with the DC Playbook team, she contributed reporting to the daily newsletter. Next she interned with the editorial digital team at the Council on Foreign Relations. In this role, she edited
content, reported on international policy, and created graphics. She had the opportunity to be published several times, including pieces on the Ebola outbreak in the DRC, high turnover in the UK prime ministership, the Ceuta migration crisis.

Internships and professional experiences like these are supported by scholarships and experiential learning funds.
