Description
JMC:2400, EVNT:3185 (3 credits)
New! Explore the innerworkings of a real and growing festival during the summer session. Learn about everything it takes to put on a multi-day music festival through hands-on exploration of Iowa's Hinterland festival in partnership with nonprofit organization Festival University. Students will learn the festival's origins, challenges, successes, logistics, staffing, crisis management, sustainability planning, programming, artist management, and more through advance study and discussions and on-the-ground experiences as our class attends and interacts with the festival in person.
Hinterland 2026 takes place in Saint Charles, IA July 30-August 2. Students who apply for this experience should be available July 29-August 3 and be prepared to spend all day outside in the elements.
What is Festival University?
An all-access music education experience.
At Festival University, we bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world experience in the music industry with behind-the-scenes access to music festivals. We provide students with unique opportunities to connect with artists, industry professionals, and their peers while earning academic credit.
