Stephen Bloom and David Dowling were recognized at the 2025 Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication annual conference the for their recently published books. Bloom received the 2025 AEJMC-Knudson Latin America Prize for his semi-autobiographical book, The Brazil Chronicles. This award is given to a book or project concerning Latin America or coverage of issues in Latin America. The work must make an original contribution to improve knowledge about Latin America to U.S. students, journalists or the public. The Brazil Chronicles details the two years Bloom spent after college as a foreign correspondent for The Latin America Daily Post in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, as well as the story behind the newspaper. Bloom began teaching at the University of Iowa in 1993 and retired in December 2024.
Dowling’s book Podcast Journalism: The Promise and Perils of Audio Reporting was runner-up for the AEJMC Tankard Book Award. The Tankard Book Award was established to honor James W. Tankard. In Podcast Journalism, Dowling examines how podcasts are transforming the journalistic landscape. He addresses how podcasts become businesses, providing space for entertainment, advertising, and niche discourse. Yet a business approach with podcasts can become a concern, such as when entertainment buries journalistic principles, sponsors influence content, or socio-political discourse turns into disinformation. Dowling teaches courses on media industries and journalism studies.
