Benefits of starting this summer

If you start classes on May 28th, you position yourself to make progress on your academic and professional goals sooner. Here's why summer can be an ideal time to begin:

Graduation comes sooner

Summer enrollment sets you up to earn your master’s degree sooner. By starting now, you'll be closer to completion than if you wait to begin this fall.

Immediate impact

The sooner you begin, the sooner you can apply your new skills and make a difference in your current role or on your professional trajectory.

Try before you apply

You can take your first course as a non-degree-seeking student and then apply to the program later. Your completed courses will count toward your degree when you decide to apply. Contact us if this approach interests you and we'll get you set up for success!

Follow these three steps to submit your application

Set up an online account to access the University of Iowa Graduate College application and follow the instructions to complete it. You do not need to do this in one sitting and are encouraged to take your time and familiarize yourself with the form and portal.

Several materials must accompany your application.

  • Statement of purpose: Explain how the degree advances your career goals.
  • Resume or CV: List your educational and professional work.
  • Three letters of recommendation: Ask individuals who can speak to your skills and capacities as a professional communicator and to your potential for advancement in the field.
  • Two writing samples: Respond to two of the three prompts in no more than 200 words.

    • Share an idea or experience you have had that you find intellectually engaging.
    • What does an organization’s past have to do with its future?
    • When do you know you’ve done your best?

Once you’ve completed the application and have gathered your materials, submit your online application to the Graduate College by logging in to your application account.

There is a $60 fee for domestic students and a $100 fee for international students. You can pay using Discover, MasterCard, or Visa.
