
Join the photography area in welcoming Jacqueline Bates, Director of Photography at New York Times Opinion via a live zoom event in the Visual Arts Building, room E125.
“Jackie is the founding photography director of The California Sunday Magazine, the Pulitzer Prize-winning print magazine, and “Pop-Up Magazine,” the acclaimed live-magazine show. Under her direction, California Sunday won the National Magazine Award for photography in 2016 and 2017, the first title in 25 years to win in consecutive years. In 2018, she curated the photography exhibit At Home, bringing a California Sunday photography-themed issue to life at Aperture Foundation. Most recently, she edited Field Guide, a visual journal inspired by the world around us (with an accompanying audio series).
Jackie’s work has been recognized by the Art Directors Club, Society of Publication Designers (where California Sunday was named Magazine of the Year twice), Lucie Foundation and more. She has been featured in Artsy, British Journal of Photography, and the “Photowork” podcast. She is currently an adjunct professor at California College of the Arts and, starting in spring 2023, Parsons School of Design. Previously, she was the senior photo editor of W Magazine and worked in the photo departments of ELLE, Interview and Wired. Bates holds an M.F.A. in photography from the School of Visual Arts.” —NYT
