SJMC students and faculty continued to excel in their professional, creative, and research endeavors this summer.
Faculty and graduate students participated in the ICA annual conference in Denver, Colorado, and the AEJMC annual conference in San Francisco, California, published new work, and planned new classes.
Javie Ssozi, Brian Ekdale, and Sang Jung Kim won the African Journalism Research award at ICA for their work on disinformation in Africa.
Raleigh Darnell, Nur Hossain, Jenny Xu, Alex Scott, Sang Jung Kim, and Bingbing Zhang won awards at the AEJMC conference in recognition of their research.
SJMC also hosted another successful Iowa Summer Journalism Workshop in July, which brought more than 80 high school students to campus for a four-day camp. Students worked with faculty and area professionals to develop and hone skills in broadcast journalism, reporting, writing, graphic design, social media, investigative journalism, leadership, and photography.
This fall, we’re excited to launch our new experiential learning requirement: SCRIPT. This addition to our undergraduate Journalism and Mass Communication curriculum will ensure that students engage in hands-on, high-impact educational experiences inside and outside traditional classroom settings. Students can choose from opportunities in six categories: Study Abroad, Community Engagement, Research, Internships, Professional Practice, or Teaching to script their experience.
We’re also thrilled to offer our new Undergraduate to Graduate (U2G) program in Strategic Communication. This pathway allows students to earn a BA in Journalism and Mass Communication and an MA in Strategic Communication in just five years.
We’ll be celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Event Management Certificate with a homecoming tailgate outside the Adler Journalism Building.
As we start the year, we’re looking forward to staying connected with you through our monthly e-newsletter and social media.
