Chris Meglio, a third year student double-majoring in journalism and sports and media culture, spent his summer interning for both the MinnPost and Pioneer Press. The former internship was created in collaboration between UIowa SJMC and MinnPost.

“Such a good opportunity…I think it was really big that I was able to get a job that could support me for the summer,” Meglio said.

As a sports reporter for The Daily Iowan Meglio was challenged to cover news and politics during his internship at the MinnPost. Meglio covered events such as a Veterans Day celebration at the Mall of America and an immigrant support event that featured a visit from Democratic Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar.

“It was cool to step out of my comfort zone and try something new to diversify my background,” Meglio said.

Meglio’s favorite story he wrote for the MinnPost was when he covered the Minnesota Timberwolves playoff game.

“It was the first piece I ever did for them [MinnPost], which was really cool because I’m a big basketball fan,” Meglio said.

For this story, Meglio conducted man on the street interviews outside of Target Center Stadium and got to see fans celebrating the game.

“The whole experience was so good. I really can’t complain about a thing they [MinnPost] taught me. They treated me well, and regardless of the pay, it was such a good opportunity, I’m more than grateful.”

In addition to his internship at the MinnPost, Meglio freelanced for the Pioneer Press, where he covered high school tennis, lacrosse and track. Meglio said he plans to continue to cover sports for The Daily Iowan but sees himself expanding his horizons by reporting on news and politics.

“If I had never tried out this [MinnPost] internship, I wouldn’t have known that I like covering news and politics as much as I do,” Meglio said. “It opened my eyes, so we’ll see where the future takes me. But [with]this in my background, I’m sure it’s going to open some doors in the future.”
