The University of Iowa School of Journalism and Mass Communication is excited to announce that Francisco Paulo Jamil Marques will be joining as an associate professor of journalism studies in 2024-2025. 

Marques is currently an associate professor at the Federal University of Paraná, Brazil. He has taught journalism and political communication since 2004.

His research interests include (1) the hypothesis that mis- and disinformation transform contemporary media systems' ecology and (2) the de-Westernization of Communication and Media research.

Marques earned his Ph.D in Communication and M.A. in Communication at the Federal University of Bahia. He received his B.A. in Communication at the Federal University of Ceará.

He has authored or co-authored several publications, in a variety of top journals, including the International Journal of Press/Politics, Brazilian Journalism Research, and Canadian Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Studies. Marques served as the lead investigator for the Research Group on Media, Politics, and Technology (PONTE), and associate editor at the Journal of Communication.

Marques’ academic studies include communication and democracy, political journalism, digital democracy, media and elections, and public opinion. He has taught a wide variety of courses, such as analysis of public opinion, political communication, and theories of journalism. At the University of Iowa, Marques looks to team up with faculty members and students to explore such issues and publish work.
